Mani Chandy works in two related areas: (1) sense & respond systems that detect and respond to critical events and (2) methods for developing reliable distributed systems, particularly distributed control systems. As with everything else in RSRG this work develops theory, builds prototypes, and is interdisciplinary straddling control theory, stochastic processes and statistics, optimization and game theory, and temporal logic.

Gerard Holzmann is interested in: software reliability, software analysis methods, formal verification, logic model checking, distributed systems design, analysis of multi-threaded software, testing, requirements capture and analysis, algorithms, user interface design, text processing, image processing, history of technology, technology transfer.

Andreas Krause's research interests include machine learning and probabilistic reasoning, both in theory and in complex real world systems. He studies fundamental principles of adaptive systems that acquire and reason about massive amounts of uncertain information from sources such as sensor networks and the Web. Example applications of his research include robotic exploration, securing water distribution networks, information gathering on the web, activity recognition and intelligent building automation.

Steven Low's research is currently directed toward the control and optimization of communication networks and protocols. He has developed a duality model of network congestion control that helps understand the current internet congestion control algorithms, expose their deficiencies, and design more efficient ones. He is also interested in digital watermarking and privacy protection.

Adam Wierman uses mathematical models to provide insight into the design of computer systems. He applies tools from the operations research community in order to evaluate the impact of design decisions in systems such as web servers, server farms, routers, databases, and wireless networks. In addition to providing new design insights, his work often provides new results in queueing, scheduling, and game theory.
