Flaubert's Parrot
I finished reading Julian Barnes' wonderful 'Flaubert's Parrot'. In
part biography, in part commentary and in part wonderful satire, the
book seeks to restore Flaubert as more than merely the author of
'Madame Bovary' and as a writer of rare genius -- replete with
witticisms, philosophy, world-wandering and syphilis. In addition to
highlighting Flaubert's pioneering contributions to the paradigm of
realism, Mr Barnes also offers many gentle asides on the Art and Form
of writing, the scourge of criticism and the quaint delights of
hobby-biographers.
