    Another year, another fall

Ever since I came to the United States, I have marked my years by the falls and the subsequent winters they bring. While the fall arrives late in Pasadena, I can already picture in my mind the lyrical and vibrant paradoxes of colours the trees must be conjuring up along the sidewalks and alleyways in Urbana and in several other little, unassuming towns in the Midwest and the East Coast. Still, here in Pasadena that magic is made up for by the clear sights of mountains in sombre suits of brown and grey distinctly etching themselves out like full-dimensioned cardboard cut-ups reclining on a silvery blue background of the sky and the clouds shuffling past it. To add perspective is the Sunday hustle and bustle of an equanimous people sipping and licking into their aperitifs under pool umbrellas outside burger joints and bakery houses -- a reassuring, becalming spectacle.
